Does Taiwan and China not care about age as much as other Asian countries?

Elderly people sure get a lot of respects from their families and friends, typical Confucius culture, but if you want down the streets, inside any offices, shoppings or restaurants you'll see most of the people are below 35 years of age, seems that people of 50 or above dont go out at all in the Mainland.
